DOWNS BARN FARM

About Us

We are very fortunate to farm over 200 acres of beautiful countryside on the Cornish coast between Mousehole and Porthcurno. South facing and very near the coast means it’s warm, perfect for growing vegetables and provides plentiful grass for our cattle. Being members of quality assurance schemes means that our beef cattle and delicious Cornish potatoes are of the very best quality.

In 2000 we decided to offer guests the chance to share our lovely part of Cornwall by providing bed & breakfast in the farmhouse. We soon achieved a VisitBritain 5 star rating with a Gold Award and breakfast award, recognising exceptional quality in all areas and in particular in service and hospitality. We continue to be very proud of our accommodation and the warm welcome offered to our guests. We also enjoy providing our guests with a varied and tasty selection of homemade and locally sourced breakfast choices.

In 2014, we added two luxury self–catering barn conversions designed exclusively for couples. Contemporary and spacious, they are a perfect retreat at any time of year with wonderful views, surrounded by farmland and with the sea sparkling in the distance.

Having lived and worked here all our lives means we are on hand to give you lots of helpful advice about the area. The best walks, the best beaches and coves, the best pubs and restaurants. We’ll let you know if the basking sharks are around or the dolphins have been spotted nearby. We’ll tell you where to go to see seals, rare birds and many of the early flowering plants and shrubs that we are best known for in West Cornwall.

We love our environment – we hope you do too!

Having lived all our lives in this beautiful area and being from a longstanding farming background we feel very passionate about preserving our countryside for future generations to enjoy. As members of quality assurance schemes for both our vegetable and beef production in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and being in a nitrate vulnerable zone, requires us to meet some very stringent rules and regulations to reduce our impact on the environment.

We take steps to reduce our footprint and save energy at every opportunity. You will enjoy the benefit of this when you see the fantastic show of wild flowers during the spring when our hedgerows absolutely burst into life. When you walk the cliffs and coast path and see wild flowers now growing that had disappeared for many years and birds that were extinct from our shores. Marvel in the variety of wildlife in our garden, fields and coastal waters, it will never cease to amaze you.

Come and share a little bit of our Cornwall, you will be glad you did!
